Hens
“What Comes First – the Chicken or the Egg”?!As you would expect, for Poplars Farm, the Hens’ welfare ALWAYS comes first!
|
The Hens that lay Poplars Farm Free Range Eggs are allowed to roam free in the fresh air and grassland
during daylight hours and have plenty of shelter from heat or humid weather if they desire it. Of course, they can also “dust bathe” – an enjoyable pastime for the hens and a way of conditioning their plumage, removing scales and dirt from the skin. |
|
During the evening and at night time they have the safety of their sheds, keeping them free from harm of foxes and the elements.
They feed on a diet of high quality grain which helps in preserving the hens’ health, the egg production and of course the quality of the eggs laid.
Naturally, as part of the British Lion Code of Practice, all the hens are vaccinated against salmonella and regularly tested and the hens’ welfare standard in general is assured to be higher than that even required by law.
Eggs
“As Sure as Eggs is Eggs”!!!We’ve all heard THAT saying! It means “absolutely certain”.
|
|
Naturally, with Poplars Farm Free Range Eggs, you can be absolutely certain of their quality,
of the fact they are SO fresh, of their tastiness and you can be absolutely certain of our eggs’ safety. We have dedicated, contracted Producers around the Cheshire plains who you can be absolutely certain are – like Poplars Farm - British Lion Code approved. |
All the eggs are hand packed on the farm – and as you would expect, our packing facilities are BEIC Lion Code approved.
We are proud to say that Poplars Farm Free Range Eggs are available at Sainsbury's and Asda and of course we supply a whole range of other prestigious customers - from supermarkets to farm shops, from hotels to cafes, from wholesalers to local small and medium sized businesses.
Our Eggs are not only tasty, they are of course full of nutrition; eggs are well known to be a natural source of high quality protein, vitamins, minerals and trace elements (such as Vitamin A, B2, B12 and D, Iron & Calcium) plus they are relatively low in calories – only around 80 calories per medium sized egg.

The British Lion CodeThis is a registered trademark which Poplars Farm Free Range Eggs is entitled to use because we are subscribers to the British Egg Industry Council and our eggs are produced according to both UK & EU law and indeed according to the British Lion Code of Practice. Launched in 1998, the British Lion Code of Practice assures you that our eggs have been produced to the highest standards of food safety. This includes animal welfare requirements which exceed those required by law, compulsory vaccination against Salmonella, strict hygiene & cleanliness guidelines for both the farm and the packing facilities, independent auditing, traceability of eggs and a “best-before” date stamped on the shell and pack (generally it is recommended that eggs are best before the 27th day after the egg is laid). |
Our Producers:
Mr. Philip Harrison, Barley Castle FarmAmong Poplars Farm Free Range Eggs' dedicated, contracted Producers is BEIC Lion Code-approved “Barley Castle Farm” in Cheshire.
The owner of Barley Castle Farm is Philip Harrison, whose grandfather introduced free-range poultry to
the farm in 1928. Philip is now the third generation of Harrison’s on the farm
so he has literally grown up with poultry and he undertook free-range-egg production himself
from the mid-1990’s. Keeping his hens in idyllic Cheshire is a bonus, something
Philip very much appreciates.Naturally Philip’s hens are free to roam on grassland during daylight hours – and they do so happily alongside (and under the noses of) grazing beef cattle. Philip collects his hens’ eggs twice a day and – when they are in top production – this could mean as many as 9,000 a day! We are delighted that Philip is more than happy to sell all his free range eggs to Poplars Farm. We collect from Barley Castle Farm on a Monday morning (including of course all the eggs laid so far on that day) and after hand packing at Poplars Farm, we deliver to the supermarkets on a Monday afternoon - they hit the shelves by Tuesday! So the Poplars Farm free range eggs you purchase from your local supermarket can very well be only 24 hours old - how’s that for freshness?! |
